Once in danger of becoming yet another mountain home neighborhood, the area encompassing the climbing at Rumbling Bald was purchased by the state of NC in 2005 to be turned into a future State Park. The Bald was saved, or so many thought. A small portion of land was still privately held – land that some of the best boulders rested upon. The Carolina Climbers Coalition stepped up to the plate once again and purchased this tract of land with the help of the Access Fund. The best boulders at the Bald really are saved.
